The YWCA North Central Indiana is on a mission to empower and protect women and children in St. Joseph and Elkhart Counties. In Elkhart County, the YWCA North Central Indiana operates Safe Haven Women’s Shelter. Safe Haven provides a safe place for up to 40 women and children who are escaping from domestic violence to stay for up to 45 days. During their stay, women are provided support to locate a safe place to live, find employment, and other tools necessary to become self-supporting and independent. Non-residential services are also available in Elkhart County and include counseling for sexual abuse; economic empowerment classes and support; an attorney for assistance filing protective orders; individual children’s therapy; sexual assault counseling and advocacy; and classes presented to all area high school students in how to recognize and prevent dating violence.
